Boyd Wichman has been in the floor covering business for 43 years, since 1972.
At the age of 21 years old, he started out selling carpet for a retail carpet store in Topeka Kansas. For the past 43 years, Boyd has been selling and installing flooring.
Boyd could sell the carpet but he would always refer to my wife to sell the interior design part of a project.
In 1994, about 14 years ago, Boyd bought his first computer, a neighbor taught him how to use it. He wanted to write a business strategy book since he had a business degree.
Over several months, he bought 20-25 books and read each one to see how he could write a similar book. He worked on this project for 5 years. The first business strategy book was completed in 1999. He showed it to several people but nobody seemed very excited about it. The book looked and read like everyone else’s book, plus he didn’t have any experience to write a he book as a business strategist. Boyd put the book on the top shelf in his office. So, he didn’t do any more writing for 4 years until 2003, when he decided to write on something that he knew about.
In March 2003, he started to write a method for interior design. His wife, Margaret, had just purchased a home. They were sitting in the great room on the sofa. The Margaret and Boyd were trying to figure out a way to design their great room. They wanted so develop a design method that was easy to understand so that they or anyone could use the method.
Boyd read many books to understand the mythology of interior design. About every book started out talking about the design elements and principles for those design elements, but beyond that information, they didn’t really help me become an interior designer. The beginning designer wants rules and methods for interior design. Most every designer wants to think that they break all the rules, so there are no rules. There aren’t any rules but only methods of design. He has tried thousands of different methods of design. He would work with a method of design for a couple weeks or a month then decide that it wasn’t going to work. This trial and error went on for almost 10 years.
About September of 2012, he started to figure out a method that would work, then he was able to assemble it together in November 13, 2012 for a first copyright.
About February and April of 2013, I had another re-write for a clearer vision of the method. But not until June of 2013, did he complete the final version.
It was important to develop a method of design that he or anyone else could easily use.
Through the years, he would develop a method of design and then get very busy with his floor covering business. When he found time to work on the project, he would forget exactly what he had written. He thought, how good of method is that if he can’t remember the process over several months. He used architecture books for the basis of his thoughts for this book; most interior design books didn’t seem to be of any value for developing the method of design, other than providing a style.
Now, after 43 years of installing and selling flooring, Boyd has flooring experience and interior design experience. Over the past 10 years, from 2003 until 2013, he started to apply his ideas of interior design to his selling flooring. These ideas helped him to develop this interior design method of proposals. This design method leads the user down a path for the design creation and for item proposals for the interior design project.
The method is easy to understand and remember.
